Film Descriptions:
Herdswoman
We encounter three Sami women and their lives with the reindeer herds.
Aina, Elisabeth and Lisa belong to different generations. Their stories reflect
life in Sápmi (Lapland) and the transition from nomadic existence to modern
society. The film relates their pleasure in working with the reindeer. They live
with and for their herds. When a court case questions their ancient rights to
the reindeers' pasture their life as reindeer keepers is at risk.
the House of Sweet Magic: Films by Helen Hill (1992 - 2004)
The film illustrates man's inner driving force and the struggle for existence.
It shows the vulnerability of indigenous peoples in modern society and the
colonization process, which has led to the present conflict about the right to
land and water.
Helen Hill (1970-2007) was a filmmaker and activist raised in Columbia, South
Carolina and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. She studied Experimental
Animation at Harvard and California Institute of the Arts. She taught film
workshops wherever she went, and compiled "Recipes For Disaster: A Film
Cookbooklet." Helen Championed low-budget and do-it-yourself approaches to
filmmaking, including super 8, hand-processing, and drawing on film, and
insisted that "you don't need to keep up with the latest technology to make a
good film, you just need a good idea."
Helen's murder in January 2007 in New Orleans cut short the life of an
incredibly talented and original artist. Here are ten of Helen's films. They
include cel animation, cut-out and 3-D puppet animation, hand-processing, and
live action filmmaking. Be prepared to enjoy tea parties, a cotton candyland,
romance activism, a potbelly pig family tree, chicken angels, and much more.
Louise Bourgeois, A film by Camille Guichard
A sculptor who consistently refused to be pigeonholed in her career, Louise
Bourgeois flittered freely between en vogue artistic movements - so freely that
she could have very easily been associated with any one movement at any one
time, and virtually defined contemporary trends in visual art. Over the decades,
she held court in such diverse areas of expression as painting, sculpture and
performance art; her central themes seldom changed, however, and she sustained a
preoccupation with social isolation, death and sexuality from endeavor to
endeavor. The documentary Louise Bourgeois sketches a biographical portrait of
its central subject, placing equal emphasis on Bourgeois's unusual artistic
creations and the unapologetically vociferous, opinionated woman behind them. ~
